How it works

How an application moves from first draft to final decision, and what each person does along the way.

Every grant on IT42 follows the same steps. Each application is a card on a board, and the card moves from left to right as it goes through each step.

1. A funder publishes a grant

The funder writes the call: what it funds, the application form and when the call closes. When it is published, it appears under Open calls.

2. You find an open call

Browse Open calls, filter them by funder or search for a topic.

  • Read the whole call page before you start.
  • Check the deadline. The call closes at the end of that day.

3. You write your application

Start an application from the open call. You can save a draft at any time and come back to it.

  1. Fill in the application form. Your name and email come from your profile.
  2. Attach the PDFs the call asks for, such as your project plan and budget. Upload them to your profile first.
  3. Choose your administrating organization: the university or institute that will host the project.

4. You submit

Before you submit, IT42 checks that every required field is filled in. You then confirm that your application is ready.

After you submit, you can't edit your application. Check everything before you confirm.

5. Your organization signs it off

The organization you named checks your application and confirms it will host the project and manage the money. It has until the sign-off deadline the funder sets. You see on your board when this is done. If the organization declines, or the deadline passes, you can apply again while the call is open.

6. Reviewers score it

The funder sends each application to a review panel. Reviewers first declare any conflict of interest. The funder may also send you questions; you answer them from your board.

Private review

First, reviewers score on their own. No one can see anyone else's scores or comments. This keeps every review independent.

Panel review

When the private review ends, the panel sees all scores and comments, discusses differences and the chairperson writes the panel's final statement.

7. The funder decides

The funder makes the final decision and your card moves to Granted or Declined. If you are granted funding, the money is paid to your organization for your project.
